Many of the themes and the ideas popularized on Fox Tv's Fringe, have their roots in the late 19th and early 20th century. At that time, science as we know it was just being discovered. Science fiction writers like Jules Verne and H.G. Wells were inspiring the world to believe and anticipate many new exciting realities, but many people were confused about what was really possible and what was just the stuff of fantasy.
All of these new ideas could be considered fringe at the time, but many became mainstream science. The two most ingenious men who contributed to technological advancement during this period were both fringe scientists as well as bitter rivals - Thomas Edison and Nikola Tesla. Not only was Edison an accomplished scientist but this inventor of the telephone also considered the possibility of creating a machine that would allow communication with the dead. Because of this, other researchers have followed suit but only with controversial results.
Fringe has also dealt with the subject of the possibility of talking to the dead through technology as seen in the clip below.
Meanwhile, Nikola Tesla not only invented alternating current (AC) and many other inventions, but his statements about where his ideas came from contributed to his image of being on the outside of mainstream science. At one point he even claimed to be in communication with the planet Mars. This image of the eccentric genius has led to his name being co-opted by those who create elaborate and false claims about his being involved with teleportation and time travel without any substantiation for these claims at all. Tesla has been associated with a number of weapons ideas, such as a particle beam death ray, but the one which he is connected to the most that actually exists now is the HAARP system in Alaska. The videos below explain what HAARP is and how it could be used as a weapon to induce earthquakes and perhaps even mind control.
The field of fringe science has had a impact on military research internationally although the extent of that impact is in dispute. Here is a video from a leading fringe scientist with a military background, Lt. Col Tom Bearden (Ret.) on the subject of Soviet military research into electromagnetics outside of the mainstream and using unorthodox approaches.
Fringe's Dr. Walter Bishop has been involved with questionable research in the past, including research on children. In the video below, actor John Noble discusses this aspect of the storyline, especially since one of the children, it turns out, was FBI agent Oliva Dunham.
Sadly, there really have been experiments performed against children and other unwilling or unwitting individuals by many countries around the world including the United States. Below is a video clip from a hearing dealing with these incidents in our nation's recent history.
